Ingredients for 4 people:

  • 5 eggs
  • 750 grs flour
  • 30 grs brewer’s yeast
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 2 glasses milk
  • 300 grs sugar
  • 120 grs butter
  • 50 grs aniseeds (rinsed and soaked in vinsanto)
  • a pinch of salt
  • grated lemon peel
  • raisins
  • 100 grs candied fruits
  • juice of 2 oranges
  • 1 glass sambuca
  • sugar sprinkles


Dissolve brewer’s yeast and baking powder in lukewarm milk and melted butter. Whisk eggs with sugar and add salt, flour, raisins, candied fruits, drained aniseeds, orange juice and a glass sambuca. Stir mixture and add milk with yeast. Continue stirring mixture until it is well creamy and let leaven (after pouring mixture in a high edged baking pan) in a warm place for about an hour. Put into the oven at 180° for about 40 minutes, turn out of the pan, brush with an egg and decorate with sugar sprinkles.
