Tuscan Sun Festival
Since 2003 the town of Cortona has the honor to host the Tuscan Sun Festival, an annual classical music and art festival that is very renowned and appreciated all over the world. The festival has been conceived by American entrepreneur of IMG Artists Barrett Wissmann, by cellist Nina Kotova and by writer Frances Mayes, author of the famous novel “Under the Tuscan Sun”. During the 1990s they expressed the common desire of bringing together musicians, singers and artists from many disciplines in a single big event. The town of Cortona, where the promoters of the festival live at present nearly permanently, has immediately been chosen as the ideal location, thanks to its intimate and welcoming atmosphere and its historical and artistic charm.
The Tuscan Sun Festival, which takes place every year between July and August, presents an interesting and varied program combining world class concerts and social events of art, cinema, cuisine, fitness, dance, literature, history and local traditions. Music shows are performed in the beautiful Romantic-period theatre, Teatro Signorelli, which is seat of important conventions and artistic and cultural meetings since 1854. Open-air shows are also organized on the enchanting Piazza Signorelli, which becomes for few nights a year the venue for musical galas under the stars.
The Tuscan Sun Festival boasts every year the patronage of a guest star, leading figures in cinema and music who give even more prestige and acclaim to the whole event, thanks to their long and important artistic career. Robert Redford, Anthony Hopkins, Sofia Loren and Sting were only some of those who actively took part in some of the festival editions.
As far as the music is concerned, the stage of Teatro Signorelli has seen world famous artists like violinist Joshua Bell, pianist Lang Lang, soprano Anna Netrebko, conductors like Antonio Pappano and Stéphane Denève, accompanied by orchestras like the Royal Opera House Orchestra of London.
On the wake of the success obtained in Italy, since 2006 the Tuscan Sun Festival is also organized in the heart of Napa Valley in California and has been already instantly recognized as one of America’s premiere artistic events. In 2007 the third Sun Festival has been established in Asia, in Singapore, ranging from performances by some of the best international and regional artists, film screenings, literature talks, art exhibitions and sessions with yoga and tai chi experts.
These three events are supported and promoted by the Del Sole Foundation for the Arts and Humanities, which enhances the study of music and arts and gives young talents the chance to perform on stages all over the world.
