The medieval events related to the Giostra dell’Archidado (Archidado Joust) are preceded by religious celebrations dedicated to St.Margherita, patron saint of Cortona, like the so-called "Colata dei Ceri" (casting of candles), when a small group of each quarter gives some wax to be casted to make a candle, which will be offered to the patron saint on the following day.

The day before the Feast day of St. Margherita, patron saint of Cortona, each quarter parades along the streets and all gather on Piazza della Repubblica, where people can watch stunning performances of players and flagflyers and the blessing of candles to be offered to St. Margherita. A long costume parade makes for the Basilica of St. Margherita to receive the blessing to the crossbow shooters who will take part in the tournament.

St. Margherita, patron saint of Cortona together with St. Marco, is celebrated at the end of May (the date varies according to the religious calendar) with big liturgical celebrations, historical-religious commemorations and typical markets set up onto the square in front of the beautiful Basilica named after the saint.
Nella piccola località di Fossa del Lupo, a pochi kilometri da Cortona, il Gruppo Sportivo Juventino Fossa del Lupo organizza con il patrocinio della Provincia di Arezzo e del Comune di Cortona la rinomata “Sagra della Lumaca”. Giunta alla sua 29° edizione, la Sagra della Lumaca propone menù tipici toscani con ricette della tradizione contadina per tutti gli amanti dei prodotti tipici locali e dei piatti a base di lumaca, primo fra tutti la specialità “lumache in salmì”. Il programma proposto in dettaglio qui sotto prevede anche spettacoli, serate danzanti con orchestre di ballo liscio, passeggiate in bicicletta nella campagna cortonese, raduni di auto e moto d’epoca, tornei di briscola e giochi a premi, e molto altro ancora.

In occasione della Sagra della Lumaca, il Gruppo Sportivo Juventino organizza una salutare e divertente Passeggiata e scampagnata in bicicletta con colazione gratuita per tutti i partecipanti. Adatta a persone di tutte le età, la scampagnata in bicicletta sarà un’ottima occasione per trascorrere una domenica all’aria aperta, nel meraviglioso paesaggio della campagna cortonese insieme a parenti e amici. Armatevi di una buona bicicletta, preferibilmente non da corsa, e di tanta voglia di divertirvi.
In occasione della Sagra della Lumaca, partecipate numerosi alla 4° Camminata Ecologica nella bellissima campagna toscana nei dintorni di Cortona organizzata dal Gruppo Sportivo Juventino Fossa del Lupo. Il percorso è di bassa difficoltà e adatto a grandi e piccini. Durante la camminata, per riscoprire il piacere di stare all’aria aperta, di rispettare l’ambiente e proteggere il nostro splendido territorio, verrà offerta una deliziosa colazione a tutti i partecipanti.

I partecipanti riceveranno un volume storico della manifestazione e potranno fermarsi per un pranzo tradizionale con due menù a scelta, di cui uno a base di lumache.

The evening before the tournament Piazza Signorelli hosts the evocative historical commemoration of the wedding of Francesco Casali, Lord of Cortona, and Antonia Salimbeni, a noblewoman from Siena, which took place in 1397. The inhabitants dressed up in traditional costumes offer their gifts to the newly married couple to the rhythm of medieval music and with a stunning flagflyers performance at the end of which the judges of the Archidado Joust draw the crossbow shooting order of the tournament.

The Archidado Joust is preceded in the morning by the so-called "Provaccia", the trial of crossbows and arrows to be used during the joust, whereas the real tournament takes place in the afternoon, when two shooters for each of the five quarters compete on the main square of the town to mark the highest score by target shooting and win the golden arrow. Winners will be then celebrated with a traditional dinner to the rhythm of medieval songs and dances.

During the week-end after the mid-August bank holiday, Cortona organizes every year the “Porcini Mushrooms Festival” at the Parterre Gardens, where all the dishes have mushrooms in their recipes, from starters to side dishes. Everything goes with excellent local wines.
