Hotel San Michele - Cortona

Il n° 15 di via Guelfa è adesso sede dell'albergo S. Michele. Ritenuto un "Condensato di storia cortonese" perché vi si trovavano fin dal XI sec. delle fortificazioni.
Nel XII sec. fu residenza cittadina dei marchesi del Monte S. Maria e nel 1206 appare destinato a palazzo pubblico: il Palazzo della Ragione ove il Podestà rendeva giustizia.E forse per qualche tempo , potrebbe essere stato , come vedremo , la sede dei Priori del Terziere di S.Vincenzo.

G. Inga ritiene che il Palazzo dei Marchesi del Monte nei sec. XI-XII sia stato a pianta rettangolare con torri perimetrali e che sia giunto ad avere l'aspetto odierno attraverso una ristrutturazione quattrocentesca fatta eseguire dai Baldelli dopo che fu loro donato dalla Repubblica fiorentina verso il 1410 e una successiva avvenuta nel Cinquecento sempre ad opera dei Baldelli.
Delle Torri , abbassate , rimangono le strutture di due vani delle scale. Nonostante notevoli lavori fattivi nel Settecento il palazzo rimane essenzialmente un edificio cinquecentesco e tale è chiaramente la facciata.

Hotel San Michele - Cortona

15 Via Guelfa, home of the San Michele Hotel, is a building that can claim to represent a condensed history of Cortona since it formed part of the fortifications as long ago as the XI century.
In the XII century it was the town house of the noble Marquis of Monte St. Maria family. Later, in 1206, it seems to have become a public building - the Palace of Justice for the town with the Podestà as judge. It may also have been the home of the Priors of the St. Vincent sector of town.

G. Inga describes the Palazzo of the Marquis de Monte St. Maria in the XII-XIII century as a rectangular building with perimeter towers and that its present appearance is due to alterations in the 1400's by the Baldelli family after receiving it as a gift from the Florentine Republic around 1410.
Further structural changes were made by the Baldelli family in the 1500's. Vestiges of the demolished towers can be seen in two stairwells. Despite considerable changes carried out in the 1700's, the Palazzo remains essentially a XVI century building as it's front façade clearly shows.
