Hotel Oasi Neumann

…A pochi metri dalle poderose mura etrusco-medioevali di Cortona, in una meravigliosa ed unica posizione panoramica, sorge l’antico monastero di S. Maria alle Contesse (oggi Hotel Oasi Neumann). Tra il 1225 ed il 1230 ha inizio l’interessante storia di questo luogo, destinata a durare per oltre sette secoli. Ideale per un soggiorno all' insegna dell'arte, della cultura e del misticismo, e particolarmente indicata per chi ama la pace e la tranquillità.

La storia:

L'Hotel Oasi nasce nel lontano 1225 a merito di un generoso Cortonese, Agnolo di Ranieri, che edificò l'immobile e ne fece dono alle Damianite (oggi ordine delle Clarisse) che vi rimasero fino al 1237.
Nel 1290 il monastero fu affidato dalle contesse Bandinucci dei conti di Cegliolo e Giasconi dei conti di Montemaggio alle suore Benedettine; da qui in avanti ha avuto origine il toponimo Le Contesse.
Nel 1945 in vescovo Petrella unì le Canonichesse del monastero di Santa Caterina a quello delle Contesse, e dato l'alto numero delle monache residenti, quest'ultimo venne ampliato. All'inizio del 1700 fu rifatta e ingrandita la chiesa su disegno dell'architetto Jannelli, la stessa fu consacrata dal vescovo Puccini e dedicata all'Assunta. Il 20.04.1782 per ordine del Granduca Pietro Leopoldo il monastero delle Contesse, se pur fiorente per l'attività culturale dell'epoca, fu soppresso, forse a dispetto delle nobili famiglie Cortonesi, che quasi tutte avevano delle monache alle Contesse, o per impadronirsi del notevole patrimonio del monastero.
Nella seconda metà del 1800 i terreni e i fabbricati vennero acquistati dal monastero delle S.S. della Trinità e dati in affitto a laici, che vi impiantarono uno stabilimento di bachicoltura, lo scempio ebbe fine nel 1891 quando i Redentoristi acquistarono chiesa e terreni, iniziando una massiccia opera di ristrutturazione guidata dall' Arch. Mirri.
Dal 1891 siano al 1966 fu adibito a seminario di studi, lasciando traccia di sé anche durante i due conflitti mondiali, infatti l'istituto delle Contesse, fu utile alla Patria in quelle tragiche occasioni come ospedale militare. Dal 1967, a causa del calo per le vocazioni, lo studentato fu trasferito a Roma e l'attività alle Contesse fu ridimensionata e nel 1973 Padre Tommaso Natalizia poneva le fondamenta all'attuale Hotel Oasi

…A few yards from the mighty Etruscan/Medieval walls of Cortona, in a beautiful, unique panoramic spot stands the ancient Santa Maria alle Contesse Monastery (the present-day Hotel Oasi Neumann). The interesting history of this venue, destined to last more than seven centuries, started between 1225 and 1230. Ideal for a holiday devoted to art, culture and mysticism, and particularly suited for those seeking peace and tranquillity.

History:

Hotel Oasi Neumann came to be long ago in 1225, thanks to the generous Cortonese Agnolo di Ranieri, who built the structure and donated it to the Damianites (today the Order of St. Clare) who stayed there until 1237. In 1290 the monastery was entrusted to the Benedictine Sisters by Countesses Bandinucci dei Conti di Cegliolo and Giasconi dei Conti di Montemaggio; from then on it took on the name “Le Contesse” (The Countesses). In 1945, Bishop Petrella united the canonesses of Santa Caterina Monastery with those of Le Contesse, the number of resident nuns of the latter thus being greatly increased. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was redone and enlarged according to the design of Architect Jannelli, consecrated by Bishop Puccini and dedicated to the Our Lady of the Assumption.
On April 20, 1782, by order of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, Le Contesse Monastery was abolished, despite the fact that it had been flourishing with cultural activities of the day. This was perhaps to spite the noble Cortonese families almost all of which had daughters there, or to seize the monastery’s considerable fortune. In the second half of the 19th century, the grounds and buildings were acquired by the monastery of the Holy Trinity and rented out to laymen who turned it into a silkworm breeding farm.
The devastation ended in 1891 when the Redemptorists bought the church and grounds, launching a massive renovation project led by Architect Mirri. From 1891 until 1966 it was used as a seminary, leaving its mark even during the two World Wars: Le Contesse served its country in those tragic occasions as a military hospital.
After 1967, due to the downturn in religious vocations, the student residence was transferred to Rome and Le Contesse's activities were redirected. In 1973 Father Tommaso Natalizia laid the foundations for the present-day Hotel Oasi Neumann.
