The Churches

(XIII century) CHIESA DI SAN CRISTOFORO
The church of St. Christopher was consecrated in 1192 and underwent different transformations through the year 1760. On the left was there is a large fresco which depicts the crucifixion, the annunciation and the assumption by the Umbran school of the thirteenth century. At the exterior it is positioned in an enchanting place and is characterized by its rustic construction and an open bell-tower in the Romanic style.

(XIII century) CHIESA DI SANT'AGOSTINO
The church of Saint Augustine was constructed in the Gothic style by the Augustine monks. Successively the Cortonese Augustine monk beatified Ugolino Zefferini (1320-1370) was buried and later conserved in a baroque sarcophagus here.
It was redone and expanded on in 1600 and there are parts of the original church and subsequent expansions which can be detected on the facade. The parts of the old monastery which are still visible are the courtyard and lunettes painted in 1669 by Giuseppe Guasparini from the brotherhood of Perugia depict scenes from the life of Saint Augustine. the third altar on the left held a painting, a work by young Pietro da Cortona which is now to be found in the Academy Museum, it depicts the Madonna and Saints.
There is a remarkable, elegant Renaissance stone tabernacle attributed to the Cortonese craftsman Ciuccio di Nuccio (XV century) on the left apse.
The church and the monastery are undergoing massive restorations.

(XIV century) CHIESA DI SANT'ANTONIO ABATE
The church of Saint Anthony the Abbot rises in the area of the Bagno di Bacco (Baccus' Bath), a reservoir from Roman times. It is rectangular shape and is 900 square meters at the interior where one can still view the remains on Via Santo Antonio. The facade is irregular sandstone, which corresponds to the present day oratory and the bell-tower. The present day open bell-tower was originally a tower, but it was substituted in the first half of the 1600's. For some time the church has no longer been consecrated for worship.
