The Churches
(XIII
century) CHIESA DI SAN CRISTOFORO
The church of St. Christopher was consecrated in 1192 and underwent
different transformations through the year 1760. On the left was
there is a large fresco which depicts the crucifixion, the annunciation
and the assumption by the Umbran school of the thirteenth century.
At the exterior it is positioned in an enchanting place and is characterized
by its rustic construction and an open bell-tower in the Romanic
style.
(XIII century) CHIESA DI SANT'AGOSTINO
The church of Saint Augustine was constructed in the Gothic style
by the Augustine monks. Successively the Cortonese Augustine monk
beatified Ugolino Zefferini (1320-1370) was buried and later conserved
in a baroque sarcophagus here.
It was redone and expanded on in 1600 and there are parts of the
original church and subsequent expansions which can be detected
on the facade. The parts of the old monastery which are still visible
are the courtyard and lunettes painted in 1669 by Giuseppe Guasparini
from the brotherhood of Perugia depict scenes from the life of Saint
Augustine. the third altar on the left held a painting, a work by
young Pietro da Cortona which is now to be found in the Academy
Museum, it depicts the Madonna and Saints.
There is a remarkable, elegant Renaissance stone tabernacle attributed
to the Cortonese craftsman Ciuccio di Nuccio (XV century) on the
left apse.
The church and the monastery are undergoing massive restorations.
(XIV century) CHIESA DI SANT'ANTONIO ABATE
The church of Saint Anthony the Abbot rises in the area of the Bagno
di Bacco (Baccus' Bath), a reservoir from Roman times. It is rectangular
shape and is 900 square meters at the interior where one can still
view the remains on Via Santo Antonio. The facade is irregular sandstone,
which corresponds to the present day oratory and the bell-tower.
The present day open bell-tower was originally a tower, but it was
substituted in the first half of the 1600's. For some time the church
has no longer been consecrated for worship.
